These macros will do what Shadow Priests do best: Bring the truths of the Void to the masses…by force.

The Single Target (up to 3) macro will attempt to frontload your DPS by opening with a charge of Shadow Word: Void, Vampiric Touch, and Shadow Word: Pain before rolling along with the rest of your kit. It’s currently tuned to use the talent Shadow Word: Void as your timer, casting a few charges of this before refreshing your dots, hopefully keeping them from dropping from your target automatically. If you are moving too much, or find your dots falling off too regularly, remove one of the SW:Void casts from the castsequence.

The AoE (4 or more) macro drops Mind Blast and replaces Mind Sear with Mind Flay. It will still dot up your targets as you tab through them, but it won’t refresh them. This is to ensure you are tab-targetting through your AoE trash.

The third Healing macro is for healing yourself or an ally. It will cast Power Word: Shield, Vampiric Embrace, and Shadow Mend. It’s very mana-intensive, so only use as a last resort. It will follow the same logic as my Disc heals macro, whereas if you are not targetting anything it will cast on yourself, if you mouseover someone friendly that will be your target, and you can focus or directly target allies as well.

Macro Notes
This macro uses talent choices that are designed to work best in all situations. I have chosen ones that will maximize your DPS in both ST and AoE situations.

This macro was tuned spamming 20 times a second, or 50ms.

Talents and Explanation
Shadow Word: Void - Front loading with a charge of SW:Void not only will help get us on to the DPS meters right away, it will also contribute a lot of Insanity and get us into Voidform as soon as possible. The macro also uses this talent for dot timing. This is fortunate since it’s the preferred talent for all high-end content.

Body and Soul - Mobility is a bit disappointing for us right now. Body and Soul at least let us move around a bit faster with each Power Word: Shield we cast on ourselves. The others can’t be counted on.

Twist of Fate - This is the only talent in this tier that truly benefits both ST and AoE damage. A powerful boost to DPS to help power enemies down once they fall below 35%. Since this applies to any enemy damaged by our skills this effect will trigger in all fights, and the longer an enemy stays in the lower third of their health the more DPS we will do.

(Your Choice) - Your choice here, but the macro will make use of Psychic Horror on ALT. I feel that the other talents just don’t offer enough.

Auspicious Spirits - Adding damage passively is highly recommended so we’re not wasting time positioning, selecting, or targetting special skills. Beyond that, crit is now found far more often on gear we’d wear which makes this talent pull ahead in most situations.

Lingering Insanity - Technically, Lingering Insanity or Mindbender will deliver just about the same DPS over the length of a 3-minute fight. However, in fights any degree less than that and LI will bring in more, assuming we’re able to get double-digit VF stacks. Mindbender is also a ST talent and does not benefit from most of your buffs, making LI more versatile.

Legacy of the Void - In all but super-short fights Legacy is the clear winner for all fight situations. We enter Voidform faster, do more damage in it, and get back to VF faster when we drop.

Known Issues

  1. If your dots are dropping with the ST macro, consider your movement before modifying the macro. If you are refreshing dots too soon, add a casting of Shadow Word: Void to the castsequence.
  2. In rare cases, Vampiric Touch will get stuck casting in a loop. This is a game engine issue and not something that can be fixed by a macro. But I have tried to reduce it as much as I can. If you see this happening, simply stop casting and start again.

DPS Numbers
In most cases, it doesn’t help anyone to tell you straight numbers. Instead, sim your character and compare. Right now, this macro is within 98% of sims.

AskMrRobot
AMR’s auto-balancing and itemization engine should not be overlooked. Squeeze out your best stats.

How can I change the ms?

Unfortunately, that’s a you question. There’s no way I can answer that without knowing what you are using to repeat the macro.

that first macro works pretty good. Did some tweaking and talent swaps for myself. A solid base to build from. Thank you for your efforts

I’d be interested in what you changed and how you use it. Tell me the results from my baseline.

I am just not able to get your numbers with your macro. Comparing them to my own this morning my AoE macro outperforms this. I did three tests at three minutes each and ran an average. Tests done on the three Void Walker dummies in the guild hall.

hmm. I am at 28% haste and 41% crit running it at 80ms off my mouse wheel I also ova a latency average of 35 ms up and down. Your macro is great for aoe but bosses are not trash packs, so i always try to build st strong. has to be gear or latency/speed differences. Any way cheers for the great base macro. Thanks again.

Are you using both macros? The ST one and the AoE one?

Also, your crit is crazy high, and you took Auspicious Spirits, which I specifically mention would be more DPS than Shadow Crash if you have a lot of crit. However, if you geared toward, say, mastery or haste, then Shadow Crash would grab more DPS even on single targets. For example, I’m around the same haste, but only 21% crit and 29% mastery.

I’d predict you won’t be as strong as soon as BfA comes out and you start replacing gear.

EDIT: Just to be sure I wasn’t messing anything up, I flushed your macro to Notepad++ and rebuilt it line by line, paying attention to your talents and how you say to use it. This time I ran your macro 5 times, for 3 minutes each. I was sure to open with VT and Ascension, as well as use Ascension on CD whenever I wasn’t in Voidform or about to be.

Your macro burst: 3k. Your macro sustain: 2.8k. Your macro after 3 minutes: 2.5k.
My macro burst: 2k. My macro sustain: 3k. My macro after 3 minutes: 2.8k.

So yours starts stronger, but after a few seconds mine pulls ahead. If the boss lasts less than 15 seconds I can see yours being the winner, but any longer and mine pulls ahead.

I’ll see if I can come up with a mix between the two that works better than both.

I find this is placing vampiric touch too often in the rotation when I place it in mousewheel down for rotation. (easier than mashing button). Not sure why it throws the random VT and misses the Void Bolt

Not sure. VT is attached to targets and shouldn’t even fire after the first time unless ALT is pressed. Are you also tabbing through or otherwise selecting new targets? Or the same one over and over again?

I saw your post on discord. You didn’t do anything wrong. perhaps it’s a play style difference. Either way here is anew version try version 2 it spreads the VT out further and hits the void bolt better. Like anything new it takes time to get it right. I am actually trying to pick your brain. Gerry mentioned the void bolt issue and I think I have that somewhat fixed.

I am not saying that your macro wasn’t good. In fact I use it for running around killing rares and such.
Note the talent change and the stuff. Again thank you for your efforts.

If I wanted to add Shadow Word Pain to the macro where would the best place to insert it be? Just in place of Shadow Crash?

It’s already in it? It will apply it once automatically. Hold ALT to reapply it once it gets low.

You can’t add it to the general macro without some sort of limiter because it is an instant with no cooldown. You’ll spam it over and over.

[quote quote=61292]I saw your post on discord.

That’s not exactly what I meant. But, moving on, I spent the day going over your newest macro and a few others that have been tossed to me in DMs. Mine is still coming out on top for me. But, I don’t expect anyone to take my word for it, I’m going to explain why.

First of all, why Fortress of the Mind, in it’s current form right now, does not do as well as Shadow Word: Void. Mind Flay is your filler spell. It’s not meant to be used at all when a stronger ability is available to use instead. The buff that FotM gives Mind Flay is only 10%, same as what it buffs Mind Blast, while Shadow Word: Void is 8% for each charge. Now, on paper that looks like FotM will give a net increase of 20% against SW:V’s 16%, but you will be routinely clipping Mind Flay for your better abilities and not getting a full 10% extra damage from it. In the same vein, Mind Blast has a cooldown of 6 seconds (adjusted by haste), where as SW:V has 2 charges at 7.2 seconds (adjusted by haste). That’s nearly a double in castings over a course of a fight. Basically, by taking FofM, you would have to micromanage your dots, your Mind Flay, and everything else like an old school Affliction lock in order to get the full benefit. But, by taking SW:V, you can just expend the charges and move on, gaining the full buff.

Secondly, Mindbender vs either other talent. Instead of looking at damage here, which is actually pretty negligible between the talents, you should instead be looking at how it affects your Voidform uptime. Lingering Insanity is pretty strong, in my opinion, letting you keep a lot of your haste for longer between non-VF stages, but since you don’t gain as much haste as you used to it falls flat in terms of a buff. Whereas Void Torrent buys you 4 seconds of more VF. The problem here is that the longer VF is active, the faster your insanity will drain. When you lock it into place with Void Torrent for 4 seconds, it’s still using every one of those seconds to up your drain rate. As soon as Void Torrent ends you will drain at the faster rate, with none of your insanity-gaining abilities having fired during that time. With the nerfs to VF that equals out to almost 0 gain in VF uptime and that makes Void Torrent a DPS loss. Mindbender, on the other hand, is a cast-and-forget-it talent, using it on cooldown to deal the same amount of damage over time, while also soaking up some insanity over time. Used when in VF means a longer VF, used when not in VF means a shorter time between VFs. It’s a clear win.

Lastly is Legacy of the Void vs Dark Ascension. I thought this one was pretty straightforward. It’s as simple as this: If fight will last shorter than 10 seconds, take Dark Ascension. The moment the fight lasts long enough for you to get into your first VF via LotV, LotV wins. Why? Because you won’t have the ability to sustain that burst and after your VF ends you won’t be able to get your next one up as fast. You will go through your next 100 insanity before achieving VF and on average will have to do that twice before Dark Ascension comes off cooldown. Meanwhile, LofV will trigger every 60 insanity, netting more VF windows over a course of a longer fight. Not to mention that your VF is stronger with LofV. Void Eruption’s cast time is reduced by 40%, that’s your VF’s nuke. More nukes. I mean, as soon as the fight lasts 10 seconds or so there is no way DA can catch up to the numbers.

The only talent I really think there is any play with is Auspicious Spirits vs Shadow Crash, as I explained in my OP. Auspicious is a crit talent. Have a lot of it? Take it. Simple as that. Really shines in that regard because it’s a no-maintenance talent and you can use Dark Void to get your AoE numbers up right way. But going that route is for the short term, once again. This time I mean in gear. You won’t hold on to that crit for long, and if you geared toward recommendations and sims for Legion you banked haste and mastery anyway, in which case Shadow Crash is superior. Once again, by 112 to 114, you will have long abandoned this talent.

But then again, by then everything here will be old news and likely tooled and balanced in such a way that everything I’m arguing will be moot.

TL;DR: Do what you like, but I did the math for you if you want a solid macro and DPS numbers. For now. All bets are off once BfA drops.

Sorry, I meant Shadow Word: Death instead of Shadow Crash.

Ah, that one’s easy. Since it’s an ability with a cooldown you can just add it on its own line in the macro. Since it won’t even be available until the enemy is 20% or lower you won’t be wasting it by letting the macro just attempt it all the time.

Significant DPS increase! Grab the new macros in the OP. Check the talents and read what I had to say about DA vs LotV.
