TWW - Zan’s Prot Paladin - Updated Dec 2025

:high_voltage: Protection Paladin – GSE Sequence

Updated: December 10, 2025

:waving_hand: Quick Intro

I’m Zan - Paladin main since Wrath of the Lich King.
This is the GSE sequence I personally use for Mythic+, where I consistently hit 97–100 logs.

This sequence is built around personal preference, and how I like to play Protection Paladin.

:brain: Core Idea / Personal Preference

  • Rotation = Automated
  • Defensives & utility = Manual
  • Protection Paladin works best when you decide, not the macro

:video_game: Manual Abilities

(Recommended regardless of Version 1, 2, or 3)

These abilities are best kept on separate keybinds, no matter which version of the sequence you use:

Defensives / Utility

  • Word of Glory
  • Lay on Hands
  • Eye of Tyr
  • Holy Bulwark
  • Ardent Defender
  • Guardian of Ancient Kings
  • Divine Shield

Utility / Control

  • Hammer of Justice
  • Rebuke
  • Blinding Light
  • Divine Toll
  • Blessing of Freedom
  • Blessing of Sacrifice
  • Blessing of Protection
  • Blessing of Spellwarding
  • Divine Steed
  • Hand of Reckoning

Pulls / Interrupt Control

  • Avenger’s Shield
  • Judgment

(Even though Avenger’s Shield can be automated in one version, both of these are highly recommended on separate keys for pulls and interrupts, regardless of version.)

:brick: Talents / Builds

I strongly recommend using Murlok.io to stay up to date with what top Paladins are running.

Builds I Use:

Lightsmith

:check_mark: Works with Lightsmith & Templar
:check_mark: Blessed Hammer playstyle only

:gear: GSE Versions (Pick Your Style)

Version 1 – Full Manual Control

  • Manual: Ardent Defender, Holy Bulwark, Avenger’s Shield
  • Auto: Sacred Weapon

Version 2 – Semi-Automated

  • Auto: Ardent Defender, Holy Bulwark
  • Manual: Avenger’s Shield

Version 3 – Fully Automated

  • Auto: Ardent Defender, Holy Bulwark, Avenger’s Shield

:backhand_index_pointing_right: I personally use Version 2.

Test on dummies and adjust to what feels right.

Hey everyone,

Been messing with the Templar build and sequence the past few days — hadn’t touched it since Season 1 of TWW. Made a few tweaks for smoother flow and better Hammer of Light usage. On 5-target dummies in Donorgal, my DPS went from 4.3M → 4.8M over 5 minutes. Basically added a priority condition to use Single-Button Assistant first and ignore everything else while we [know:Hammer of Light]. No more Holy Power overcapping when Hammer of Light is ready to go!

Hi! I just read your post because I play Paladin, Tank, and Retribution.

In the Paladin/Retribution macros thread, I have a thread about excessive Holy Power. I have all my stats and DoTs fine, but I always burn out from Holy Power, I have to spend more.

How did you solve the problem of excessive Holy Power? I need your help! Thanks! @MrZanyz

You say you’re adding priority to the button, but I don’t understand how you’re doing it or what macro you’re using. Could you provide a screenshot of what you’re doing so I can do the same? Thanks

Basically, the use of conditions within your /cast and /castsequence is what makes or breaks it.

My workaround for giving Hammer of Light priority (so I don’t waste time casting 3x Blessed Hammer and 2x Judgment while already sitting at 3 Holy Power) is the use of [known:spell].

As far as I know, this only works for spells that replace the original button of another spell.

Examples of this type of replacement are:

Eye of Tyr → Hammer of Light

Thunder Clap → Thunder Blast

(Those are the two that come to mind right now.)

Because these spells replace the original button, we can use [known:spell] to ‘‘force’’ the macro to do something as long as that replaced spell exists.

Example:
/cast [known:Hammer of Light] Single-Button Assistant; Judgment
If Hammer of Light is active (meaning Eye of Tyr has transformed), the macro will use Single-Button Assistant and it will no longer use Judgment until Hammer of Light transforms back into Eye of Tyr.

Another example:
/cast [known:Hammer of Light] Eye of Tyr; Shield of the Righteous
This will cast Hammer of Light, even though the macro line says Eye of Tyr.

That’s where some background knowledge and testing becomes important — if you want to force-cast a 2-in-1 spell, you must write the original spell name, and in this case that is Eye of Tyr.

With that same knowledge, we can also create other condition-based macros like the one I have in the original post above:
/castsequence [@target,exists,harm,nodead] reset=2/combat Avenger's Shield, Consecration; Blessed Hammer

No mouseover/no target → it uses Blessed Hammer (great for pre-building Holy Power).

Enemy mouseover/target → it runs the Avenger’s Shield → Consecration sequence.

Hope this helps.

But how do you translate this to exceeding 5 HP charges in one hability?

There’s no “known 5-charge Holy Power ability”. How do you automatically avoid using Final Verdict or Vengeful Wrath when you’re above 4 or 5 HP charges?

I don’t understand the connection you’re making with not burning out of HP.

Many of us in the Pala Retri group are having this problem. Please give us a solution
Ty

I honestly haven’t touched the Retribution spec for the whole expansion, only used one of you guys’ sequences on the site to get my solo ?? delves achievements for each season >.<

But I’ll give Ret a shot. I assume you mean the Templar spec for Retribution and using Hammer of Light?

No. You said that with the one-button macro you avoid exceeding the extra Holy Power.

I need to know how you do it so I can do the same in my rotation. Could you send me a screenshot of how you have that one-button configured to use a skill when Holy Power reaches 5?

I think there might be a bit of a misunderstanding here, as well as some basic understanding of how conditions and the Single-Button Assistant work. But what I’ve been saying is basically:

I’m not checking for 5 Holy Power with any condition. WoW doesn’t give us a [holyPower] type of macro condition, so we can’t write a macro that says “use this skill at 5 HP.”

What I am doing is preventing Holy Power overflow indirectly by giving certain abilities priority through the use of Blizzard’s own rotation logic, which is the Single-Button Assistant.

Example:
Instead of continuing the normal rotation and having the chance of generating more Holy Power when Hammer of Light is active, my macro forces the button to use Single-Button Assistant first. That stops the rotation from generating extra Holy Power until Hammer of Light is spent because of how Single-Button Assistant works. Single-Button Assistant is basically a lite version of a rotation bot. It has strong logic built into it, and it will on its own prioritize spending 5 Holy Power before generating more.

So just to be super clear:
:check_mark: No conditions read your Holy Power
:check_mark: No conditions check for “5 charges”
:check_mark: The only trick (that I know of) is using [known:Hammer of Light] to give priority to another spell such as Single-Button Assistant — or the spell itself like Wake of Ashes/Eye of Tyr, depending on how you choose to make it.

I’d suggest you read up on the Single-Button Assistant as well as look up which conditions work and how they work.

Hope this makes things a bit clearer.

You just made my macro stop using any extra HP. You’ve helped me a lot, and I’m so grateful

I’ve added the update with your solution to my macro post (Highlord & Ricore COMBO - DUCKDIN - #30 by Drussek). Now my macro doesn’t use any HP. Thanks

In macros, isn’t there an option to use “when available” instead of “known”? If you can cast Shield of the Righteous, you cast it; if you can’t (no HP), then you cast Judgment. That would be perfect.

My idea is to avoid increasing the CDs when using the help button. If we can do that without the button, it’ll be faster, right?

Yeah, the Single-Button Assistant does have a fixed GCD, which works against our Haste stacking.

But there’s no way to make a macro with conditions like “use this spell only, when and if.” If Blizzard allowed that, we’d have zero issues with rotation bots or anything similar, which is exactly why they keep macro conditions very limited. Didn’t we already discuss this?

Your example of wanting it to use Shield of the Righteous at 3 Holy Power and Judgment otherwise is already something we can handle through GSE by putting both spells into the sequence.

I’m not sure what you are trying to achieve here beyond that >.<

The way I use the Single-Button Assistant is only for the 2-in-1 spells that need better logic work-around, which we can’t achieve on our own but only with the help of Blizzard’s built-in Single-Button Assistant.

Well, at least I find that to be the better work-around at the cost of increased GCD for 1–2 attacks, till it goes back to normal use of the GSE rotation.

I’d again suggest that you look up which conditions works for WoW macros.

You’ve answered my question. My goal is to never exceed 5 Holy Power. That’s why I thought there might be a way to say:

If you can use Shield of the Righteous (it has at least 3 HP), use it; if not, use Judgment.

If that’s possible, it’s a limit you put on the macro to prevent unlimited HP generation. The Retribution Paladin loses a lot of damage by not spending HP. The solution you gave me with the assist button fixes that and greatly improves my macro. My idea now is to do the same thing without that button. But I see that it’s not possible. No worries

Sheild of the righteous is off the gcd so it can be used with a generator in the same box where in ret all our spenders are on the gcd so cant be tied to a builder

Curious what secondaries your running in your particular setup i havent been running my prot pally much because he seems extra squishy i had a buddy mention he was stacking verse mast on his

This is what I am currently running:

I do agree, Paladins this season are a bit on the squishy side.
If anything, I’d stay around 40–42% Crit. Keep Mastery where it is for the 52% base block so you get the 100% spell block. Aim for about 8–10% Versatility, and then just dump the rest into Haste But no lower than 25% I’d say.

But again, it really depends on the dungeon you’re running. This is just a solid all-around setup until you start tryharding.

Lol yeah im playing my warrior this season for prot but most of my buddies dont tank and i need to finish the pally off so thought I may try him again at it i was 3k last season as a tank on him but this season he just feel alot squishier then last season

Guys, to use it says not avariable in this version i need GSE 3238 in order to use this macro. Any idea?

That’s odd.. I’ve re-uploaded the import, could you try import again?

Can see on curseforge that the latest update to GSE happened 4 days ago so maybe a new string were needed from me but I don’t know.

I am using the latest 3.2.40 GSE version.

what macros to spam? PPal_AS+Cons OR Zan’s_PPal_Sequence_TWW?

If I just spam this macro PPal_AS+Cons , shouldn’t I turn off the ActionButtonUseKeyDown?
